Marlys received her education in the rural Readlyn Schools. On January 28, 1946, she was united in marriage with Herman Buhr at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for many years east of Sumner, prior to retiring in 1980. Herman’s death occurred on December 6, 1996. Marlys remained in her home until moving to the Hillcrest Home in December of 2012. She was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Marlys enjoyed reading and embroidery (which was a useful skill for helping to patch up her grandchildren’s clothes).

Marlys is survived by her five children, Judith (Michael) Sells of Washington, Donald (Diane) Buhr of Sumner, Harold Buhr of Sumner, Carol (Philip) Uhlenhopp of Sumner, and Barbara (Dari) Shirazi of Iowa City; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Eldora Seegers of Hiawatha; one brother, Henry (Laura Mae) Lobeck, Jr. of Waterloo; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members.

In addition to her parents and husband Herman, she was preceded in death by one son, Dwight in 1974; four brothers, Edmond, Hugo, Wilbert, and Carl; and two sisters, Valeska Buhr and Emma Ladage.

To all my cousins, I hope you received the card I sent to you at Hillcrest Home. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Your mom always had a smile on her face when we chatted on my visits to see her at the Home. God Bless you all.
